What makes you a good mentor?
As a recent graduate, I understand the excitement and uneasiness that comes with entering the workforce after graduation and making choices that will steer your career. Before being a Mentor, I was a Mentee with the Carleton Alumni Mentors Program and I found it was an excellent opportunity to learn, share, and obtain access to new resources, connections and perspectives. Having had recent experience as an Undergraduate student and as a mentee, my goal is to pass along the resources, decision-making strategies and insight that I have gained over the past 5 years. There are no right or wrong directions, just different paths, and I believe it's about bringing to light which is the right one for you and then creating a strategy to achieve your goals. My approach to mentoring is to get to know my mentee's educational background, interests and goals and to help guide them towards their desired direction by asking thought-provoking questions and providing tools and resources that they can use to help them succeed.
About Victoria Marcantonio
I graduated from Carleton University in 2015, obtaining a Bachelor of International Business with a concentration in International Marketing and Trade and a Minor in Spanish. I had the opportunity to live, work and study abroad in Madrid, Spain during my third year of studies which was a truly incredible experience.
After graduating, I worked in Sales for an international textile brokerage company, whereby I managed a portfolio of prospective customers from around the world. My role involved building and nurturing relationships with prospects and offering potential solutions for their business needs. I began working at Export Development Canada in 2015 as a Student, where I have built my career over the past 4 years. My current role as a Senior Associate on the Global Trade team involves contributing to the promotion and delivery of business connection initiatives for Canadian exporters in the Infrastructure and Power sectors, with the objective of supporting Canada’s small to medium sized companies by enabling them to take advantage of global business opportunities.
Some fun facts about me: I love experiencing and learning about different cultures, I enjoy practicing my Spanish whenever I can. Outside of work, some of my favourite pastimes are hiking, rock climbing and gymnastics.
