THE BROWNIE AWARDS 2.0:
The Brownie Awards: Submit nominations now! DEADLINE AUGUST 23!
More than 50 years have passed since we started our J school journey together. To help rekindle memories and catch up on the intervening decades, we are resurrecting the Brownies 2.0. Yes, the (infamous?) Awards Show that began in 1976 is back. Award categories back then included Best Performance by a Would-be Journalist in a Camera Hogging, Stops and Nothing in their Ruthless Clutch for the Top Role, Best Make-Up, Hairstyling, Costume Design and Shades, the George ‘I’ve got a million of ’em’ Frajkor Award for Worst Joke, and Best Smug Second Year Upstart. We’ll remind you of those first winners, but in keeping with the theme of celebrating our hits, misses, memories and lessons learned over our careers, we’ll also be doling out six new awards.
As we did way back then, we’re asking for your help with the nominations. In 20 words or less give us your suggestion for any or all the following:
- The skill I learned at J school that I used the most
- The biggest change in our profession that I’ve witnessed or felt during my career
- My best career move
- My most unfortunate career move
- ‘My fondest memory of J school
- The Prof I remember most, for better or worse
Hilarity and fabulous prizes will ensue! The deadline for submissions is August 23. Please send to two of the nominating committee members: jfantham@rogers.com, Glennich@rogers.com
If you’re not sure about joining us at this reunion, think of this:
Re-connections and new connections make life so much richer. And this is probably the last time you’ll see some old friends.
We all have friends who have gone ahead of us. Make sure that when it’s your turn, these memories will put a smile on your face!
And if you know a classmate who hasn’t received an invitation, please direct them to this webpage or contact cu_proud@carleton.ca.

We’re pleased to invite all Carleton Journalism BJ alumni from the graduating classes of 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979 to gather for a class reunion in Ottawa this September!
Our goal is to enrol 40 participants or more by June 15, so if you’re coming, please let us know by completing the reunion interest survey. If you don’t fill out the survey, we won’t have you on our list … and you’ll miss this fabulous event! The survey includes a proposed program for the weekend and your suggestions and input are most welcome!
Reunion Invitation May 2024
You remember Carleton in the late 70’s?? You were getting your Journalism degree one of those years… then you’d start your career. Trudeau senior was our PM. Trudeau junior was six years old. Margaret was dancing at Studio 54 with Mick. And in the Spring of each of these years, a bunch of enthusiastic Carleton Journalism grads would be unleashed upon the world.
Isn’t it time to regroup, to hear the stories of our careers? Our war stories, our wins, our losses? Was journalism, in all its forms, your life? Do you think there’s life after journalism?
Let’s meet old friends and get them back in our lives.
Our story? Well, you know the simple way to tell a story: the W5 + H
WHO? Carleton Journalism grads of ’76, ’77, ’78, ’79
Stay tuned for updates!
WHAT? A reunion of all of us!
And if you think ‘maybe next time’, know this: ‘next time’ may not come. We have lost some of our colleagues, and that trend will continue. As Stephen Leacock said: “Life, we learn too late, is in the living, in the tissue of every day and hour.”
WHERE? Ottawa
WHEN? September 13-15, 2024
WHY? So we can learn what each of us has been doing for the last 50 years (almost). We’ll find out “Is there life after Journalism?”
HOW? How do you let us know if you can join us?
Complete the REUNION SURVEY to confirm your interest in attending. We will take on the work of organizing all the details.
And if you know a classmate who hasn’t received an invitation, please share with them the REUNION SURVEY link, or contact cu_proud@carleton.ca.
