Lighting the Way: Darrell Herauf’s Enduring Impact
By Courtney Buchanan
For more than 40 years, retired Sprott School of Business professor, Darrell Herauf, dedicated himself to teaching, mentoring, and supporting students at Carleton University. Known for his unwavering commitment to student success, Darrell believes deeply in the transformative power of education and the importance of creating opportunities for others. This belief influenced the lasting relationships he built throughout his career and continues to guide his philanthropic endeavours at Carleton and beyond.
Raised on a farm in Saskatchewan as part of a close-knit family of 14 children, Darrell learned the importance of giving back from an early age. His parents were notably involved in their community and regularly found ways to be of service: from fundraising to support a community-based baseball team and providing caretaking at the local church and school. Their example of generosity and volunteerism helped shape the values Darrell carried throughout his life and career.

At Carleton, Darrell found great joy in working with students — not only in the classroom, but through mentorship, student activities, and athletics. He often spoke about “seeing the light go on” when students discovered confidence in themselves and their abilities. Over the decades, he remained inspired by the many students who went on to successful careers and returned to share the impact their education had on their lives.
Beyond Carleton, Darrell helped shape accounting education across Canada as co-author of “Modern Advanced Accounting in Canada,” the country’s leading advanced financial accounting textbook that is now in its 11th edition. He also consulted extensively in accounting education and served as an instructor for professional accounting accreditation organizations. For Darrell, teaching was never simply about academics; it was about helping students realize their potential and encouraging them to build fulfilling futures.
Darrell’s philanthropy reflects his belief that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. Through the creation of scholarships, bursaries, and experiential learning funds he has helped students overcome barriers, pursue their passions and contribute positively to the world. His generosity has also extended beyond Carleton, supporting charitable causes, community initiatives, and organizations meaningful to his family and community.
His dedication to helping others learn, grow, and succeed has left a lasting legacy of opportunity and compassion. Through both his professional accomplishments and philanthropic leadership, Darrell continues to exemplify the transformative power of giving back.
