Prior to her appointment to the position of Director General in 2009, diplomat Elissa Golberg was the Representative of Canada in Kandahar, Afghanistan from February 2008 to January 2009. In this role, she was the senior Canadian government interlocutor on governance and development matters with Afghan officials, international organizations and civil society.
With the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade since 1996, Golberg has worked on peace and conflict issues, human rights and humanitarian affairs. She participated in the management of conflicts in countries such as Afghanistan, Kosovo and Lebanon, and also played a leading role in Canada’s response to major natural disasters, including the October 2005 South Asia earthquake and the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Golberg is a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for Public Service and three Ministers’ Awards for Foreign Policy Excellence.
